happy birthday khatia

Today is Kha-tia's birthday. We went over to Mauro's to celebrate. Khatia spent the whole day making Georgian cookies and cakes to celebrate. Sophia apparently only liked the white ones, she licked or poked the other ones and then put them back...so i ate loads of them.Make a wish and blow out the candles!!
Giulia, caught in the action.
Zio Nanni saves the day...just when Sophia was about to throw a big tantrum, Nanni arrived directly from Luxembourg with a fishing game for Pia and saves the day!
With loads of participation from friends, we had enough to get a present that moved Khatia to tears, a sewing machine.
Sophia asked and asked and asked and finally Holber let Sophia have a go at Guitar Hero. Good ol Holber!
A special shout out to the Monoboob. leave it to holber to take sophia's ball, something so fun and innocent and find a way to thoroughly gross us out! (is he beer-tating?)

Florence

One of the coolest things about living abroad is the unique play dates! An afternoon at Children's Discovery Museum is fun but an afternoon wandering the streets of Florence, you can't beat that! We are so lucky that we have lots of friends that come to visit. Plus the opportunity was perfect, Max couldnt wait to try out the new car! The only bad thing is, in Florence you are not allowed to drive in the city from 7 am to 7 pm or something crazy like that.
Sara, Cynthia, Sophia and Eric Ignacio
(that glass of wine looks bigger than Sophia!)
Kissing Sophia'sEric stunned all of Italy by being a Daddy that multi-tasks. It's unheard of here!
You have to look carefuly in the crowd and you can see Eric. We were at the Duomo when Sara's balloon blew away. Eric with the backpack strapped on the back and Sophia in the baby bjorn in the front, played frogger with the circling buses, mopeds and cars to retrieve it. What a Dad!
The Ignacio's went to the Academia to see David and we went for a walk around the city.
Looking towards Ponte Vecchio.
The best view of the city can be seen from Daddy's shoulders! It's only April and the city was already crowded.
We had to stop at a fountain so Sophia could play in the water.
The girls found a carrousel and took a ride. !
I'm taking after Mom, my head was spinning after
We had a great lunch of different cold cuts and cheeses and some wine.
Cheese!
Sophia talks about Sara all day long now.
As soon as we get back to the states we will have to set up a play date!

the Q

Max Al B Nese didnt actually have to work late tonight. Tomorrow is a holiday - the liberation of italy (or when the US entered Rome, fascist booted or something to that nature -. Anyhoo, we took advantage of Max being home and the good weather we got together to celebrate...VIVA ITALIA. Okay we just got together so we could eat and drink, coinky-dink on the holiday....
Princess Greta.
dont be fooled by that one piece of lettuce in greta's hand...
we counted how many teri-burgers you ate greta!
One, more job for Al B Nese - MaxDonalds.
Cheers. Props to PES, on a wing and a prayer, they just got confirmed their first gig.

Treviso

Khatia had a second interview in Treviso (towards Verona/Venice) and we made a day trip out if it. The town is very charming. The town is encompassed by a wall and rivers and there are many small, foot traffic only streets to wander about. when i wikipedia'd to see where we were going yesterday, i read that there are only about 3,000 people that live inside the city walls-crazy Logan had more kids than that when we attended. but the city is suburban outside the walls and most of the people live there of course.

I discovered that Khatia is map obsessed. She would be a good partner for the Amazing Race, Fashion Edition. Actually it was a good partnership. We wandered, I snapped pictures and wandered off and she steered us straight again.
There were lots of young people out and about. The town center has all the shopping, and there are a lot of covered archways to stroll beneath. It was a really nice day, so they werent really needed, but i imagine when it is raining or the sun is beating down hard they are really handy. Loads of people just bike around. There are lots of bike lanes (unlike milan, which has only 1 that crosses the diameter of the circular shaped city. it starts and stops and restarts somewhere else and stops again and there are mopeds and pedestrians and poop everywhere-which doesnt really matter anyways because if you dont work and live along the path, you cant use it) and there are actually places to park your bike too!
One of the stores that will sell some of Khatia's future designs??

They have really cute kid's clothes. There are loads of embellishments and details on everything so it could be a lot of fun to design for them.
On the way to, Khatia and I chatted each other up and got current on the latest. On the way back we watched episodes of Project Runway i had uploaded to the LG. the 3 hour trip flew by both directions. Keep your fingers crossed for Khatia.

The Adoption

Well, the new baby came home today. Max once again is a proud Papa - of a Ford Focus. Just in time too, Saturday we're going to Florence to meet Eric Ignacio and his family - Max can't wait to drive. And since we will be taking the car instead of taking the train, i can take all the clothes i want! hooray!

Project Of The Day

well now there are leaves too.
and sophia wanted to paint too.
max is in london as of today, so we girls are on our own. sophia chose pizza for dinner, so i busted out with some frozen dough, went down to Lino and Milena's veg stand on the corner and got some fresh mozzerella and bara bing bara bang - pizza! easy time occupier and sophia put on the stuff she liked (ham and sauce - all of a sudden she doesnt like cheese) so she ate everything.

project of the day...

a lantern, brought to us by: nickjr.com. this is a cool site to find things to occupy sophia's time. i usually download a couple of things to color before going on a trip or a restaurant or even a rainy day.

i think my mom is ready for a second grandkid...sophia wanted to talk to the grans, she said she missed them, so we called. no one was home, so she left a message to call back. apparently the mom dragged the dad in the house from the garden and they called back immediately. when i didnt say anything of great importance she was like 'thought-you-had-something-important-to-say-yeah- okay-gotta-go-buh-bye-heres-dad!' sorry charlie, it was just sophia wanting a little gran-time. better luck next time (or try the other daughter, she's married now) :op

the camera broke AGAIN

it's just the lens cover. it stays opened. every year i have brought this stupid camera in to be fixed, the first time was my fault, but the last 2 werent. how annoying, this will be the third time. hope i can still use it because the ignacios are coming next week.

in-laws are part of the adventure too

the nonni returned to cuneo after lunch. oh where oh where do i begin?? please dont let the door hit you in the culo on the way out...
let's see, the wknd started like this:
scene: sophia having a tantrum just before they walked in. setting the tone for the wknd: i was greeted with the usual: oh what did they do to you? what a mean mom. how come they torture our princess. sophia is such a good girl, when she is with us she never throws a tantrum. why yes, hello to you too.

thatsa italiano: the mom really doesnt trust me to cook anything decent. i thought i made a pretty good brasato with polenta. and yes, thats all i made - i didnt do the other courses (antipasto, pasta, dessert etc) because i was already warned that nonna was bringing a zucchini quiche (which really turned out to be that, plus tomato appetizers and a big jar full of homemade mayo and stewed boar (for sunday) plus that big exaggeratedly, lookin-like-it-on-steroids sized chocolate egg). i should have made those other courses because it must have appeared we didnt have enough food, the nonni decided to go to the store for some bread (which we had loads of already). they came home with: even more bread, packages of various prociutto (not the ones sophia should eat), cheeses and other various stuff. our fridge is overflowing. most things will probably go moldy cuz we wont be able to finish all of it in time. (well we can always give it to mauro, he likes food after the expiration date passes). i'd probably just let it roll off my back, if it werent for the fact that if i bring anything over to their house, it gets dissed - nobody eats it but soph, max and me. (i never even brought over my disgusting sugary omelet disaster, which would at least give some explanation) . okay, so i get it, that they arent into my cuisine - fine. but i was sort of ticked i was making something to bring to someone else's house and my eats still got nosed in. the oven got opened a few times while i was making coconut flan to bring to olivers (in which i forgot to put the coconut, so i guess its just called flan...thanks for clarifying holber :o) . okay, well maybe for that one i did need the help. it flattened but at least it didnt taste like a sickeningly sweet omlette this time! im improving!

you know i can deal with buying clothes for a 7 year old and then messing with the elastic and length, forcing it to fit her now (but not letting her grow into it). i can deal with the giant easter egg that could have been a little smaller. i can deal with the having to buy her something every time they come. giving her money just because she asked. giving her food every 2 seconds. feeding her loads of whatever she asks for just because she asks, not giving her a chance to eat veg and meat or anything with nutrients. i can deal with the fact that the house always has toys everywhere and im constantly picking stuff up. i can deal with them putting on tv, just because she asks. them encouraging her to dirty up the windows i just cleaned, because they think its cute. i can deal with all the other stuff that happens during the course of a visit, them's just piccole patate, im going coo-coo for cocoa-puffs trying to figure out what to do about the self props- now im not fishing for compliments or anything, but you know... i really dont know how to handle that they see anything sophia does is thanks to them (saying please/thank you, counting, going to the bathroom on her own). i mean, im glad they are proud and, but if they could do it with just a little humility and without it seeming like we are just sperm and egg donors and the carrying vessel. i mean, i dont care if we dont get a pat on the back, but when it comes to the disciplining...its so contradictive to what they self high-five for. any sort of time out, scolding, anything we do to teach sophia right from wrong, ends up in them saying something against us, either to her face or behind our backs-but within earshot(see opening paragraph), telling sophia that they will buy her something to compensate, yanking sophia out of my arms so they can cuddle her- the list goes on (and on and on and on). and the kick me when im down is, when sophia runs away from them and comes back to be cuddled by me, all i can hear (and i assume sophia as well) are comments of what a momma's girl she is (not a compliment) and other comments to me that convey jealousy. im her mom, max is her dad. they want to be more than grandparents, but only for the easy stuff. how do i deal with that??

you know, i try to take it all with a spoon full of sugar, but i gotta chase it with a sambuca. looks like i need to have a drink at the whine bar!

dawson's digs

knowing we had free babysitting and a need to escape, olber and etta invited us for thai at the o-man's crib. it was my first time at his house! i was so excited! they always say the house is the size of a postage stamp, actually it was bigger than i thought and totally cute. the complex is small, new and nice . the neighborhood is nice and its close to the freeway and a major mall/grocery store.here's the kitchen
(that little white thing next to olivers butt is the fridge)
ps im sitting on the sofa on the opposite wall taking the picture,
so you are also getting a panoramic of the living room too, you just dont know it.
but really it's not the size that counts, it's what you do with it.
i was talking about the yummy thai dinner, what were you thinking?
look greta seems satisfied with it!
and so does max!

the apartments only downfall is, the neighbors are kind of trashy-
(greta said that skank has been out there for a few weeks, nobody knows why they just left her).

i left out the br and ba for privacy reasons. only bummer is, i forgot to take a picture of the couch...you know one of those 'borrowed' from a friend deals, of course the girl left italy and hasnt come back yet, so they cant 'return it' or throw it away. you have to choose wisely who you sit with on it, for example with greta, we sit and could hold on to the arm rests and stay up. sitting with max there was a slow gravitational pull to the black hole center and i couldnt even drink i was so off balance -there was something very mystery spot about the whole deal.
but you can get a glimpse of it here as oliver does an imitation of csi miami dubbed in italian:

ps im extra touched that oliver hung some of my artwork on the wall:

it tells the true story of little holbers first trip skiing - the door was actually opened and he skied straight into the house, but it's more dramatic in my version...(ps no real snowmen were hurt for the making of this card).

the biggest biggest easter egg in the whole wide world

the nonni arrived bearing presents today. since we missed easter, they came with a gigantic easter egg from bonfante's (the famous place that makes cakes and sweets in cuneo).sophia liked picking off the sugar and eating it.

it's an only a chocolate egg, (im imagining a different scenario).
there was a small pearl bracelet inside.

a visit from pietro

pietro & paolo came bearing gelato. then we went to the park to play. the little kids watched:
the little kids watched the bigger kids taggin the walls. we cant figure out if this is organized community activity (it was the middle of the day) or it was just time to change the decoration. nice that nobody was wearing masks and they were spraying feet from the little kids, ah welcome to cologno, we've got fun and games...

Wee!

Today Sophia went to school in panties! She only wet her pants twice...but not from going shishi! It was due to splashing in puddles on the way to school and on the way home! Hooray Sophia!

the tree

well this is a painting that i stupidlydecided i wanted to do before sophia was born. max's dad kindly made the board as soon as i asked. but as for my part, well i wasnt so good. it took me forever to gesso. then forever to draw it in. i started an under-drawing shortly before sophia turned 2...and now she is about to turn three and i decided to scrap the oil painting idea (too toxic/dont think the gesso is a good enough quality). regesso'd the board (yeah i know you arent supposed to go over oils in acrylics but oh well) and for the last 3 days ive been slappin around the ol' acrylics, perhaps i will finish before sophia finishes college!

the Psyche

8:20 wake up (20 minutes late) eat breakfast, get sophia dressed/fix hair (it's picture day)
8:40 still fixing sophia's hair
8:50 sophia's hair fixed, perfect braids, breakfast eaten, get myself dressed
9:52 sophia's hair a mess
9:20 (what the hell happened to the time??) max runs out door with sophia (he is faster and she has to be at preschool by 9:30)
9:45 max is back. wait for oliver to arrive, we need to borrow his car
10:00 oliver arrives, was delayed due to unusual amount of traffic (accident at linate). jump in car, drop oliver off at metro, jam to Sesto San Giovanni -again molta traffica! freakin out!
10:20 whew, looks like we're gonna make it
10:25 cant find street, looks like we're not gonna make it for the:
10:27 appt at police station (waited for months to get the appt, which arrived 6 months ago, then waited for months for the date to arrive)
10:27 arrive, park car, walk to the wrong entry, run to the right entry, where upon we are handed:
so basically the appt we recvd months ago, was just so that we could pull a # and wait in line.
10:29 polizia guards explain how to get to 'immigration office' -couldnt understand a thing
10:30 walk into wrong office
10:31 walk into next office, red electronic display says Now Serving: 150 (inside it is hot, humid, smelly and crowded-with people from albania, romania, morocco, senegal, afganistan etc who look like theyd slept there, they'd been waiting so long. many have their kids in tow. 'office' consists of 4 graying and dingy dirty walls, a row of 'desks' along the wall opposite the entry. they are painted white and each of a different height, placed side by side to serve as a 'service windows.' chairs face the 'service windows' and are crowded in three crooked rows, squished against the back wall so that no one but the front row has leg room. there is loads of empty space between the seats and the windows-as if the people working dont want to get too close to the people waiting-like maybe they have cooties or something like that. i know we have it easy compared to most people there-otherwise they wouldnt endure all that just to get a permesso di soggiorno,(like green card))
10:32 unable to believe that we were given such a precise time just to pick a number to wait, max goes outside and confirms with a different cabinieri if this was the correct office. it was.
10:32 and 30 seconds we sit down on the stairs outside
10:35 the polizia comes out and says we should go wait in the office because the numbers move fast, hundreds of people have already come and gone. (we saw none of them-maybe there was a different exit???) . we tell him NS:150, but he goes on insisting. we get up, walk over and NS: 152! butthead, MYOB! so we sit down EXACTLY where we were because even if we lose our spot, it is our bees wax and not his.
10:40 bored/cold, we start doing the math about what time we will be called. NS:156
we bet breakfast for closest to time called. my guess: 11:22am max's guess: 11:30am
10:41 tick tick tick. what better way to pass time than to think of a way to blog this event! i snap foto above. max decides to snap foto of NS counter.
10:42 max walks in, standing in the middle of the door, aims camera at display. man JUMPS up and says, hey hey what the hell are you doing?? jumps out of the office, does the 50 meter dash and shouts, you cant take pictures here. snaps camera away from max. this is a govt office, you cant take pictures in a govt office (max indicates there is no sign and he was just taking a picture of the display). tries to make max erase the pictures, that he didnt get a chance to snap. what are you some sort of reporter? are you italian? show me your documents? what are you taking pictures for?? blah blah blah. max tells him if he was a reporter on a secret mission, he certainly would have a better camera, and not stood in the middle of the doorway, in front of the desks in a bright red jacket. more blah blah blah.
10:43 max comes out laughing.
10:45 man comes out scowling, surveying area, but no eye contact with max.
10:53 man comes back out and makes max go to a different office, he re-shows documents. the boss of the first guy grouses about the exact same thing, blah blah you reporter, blah blah no pictures, blah blah blah. then says to max, what are you doing here, you could have had the green card months ago if you went to the office at montebello. (well, by now we are here and might as well wait, right?hmmmm....should have rethought the idea)
11:02 NS:165, we start re-betting, looks like neither of us will be even close.
new bets, loser buys lunch: me: 11:52 am max:12:15pm
11:15 we go sit inside, freezing outside. by now a few people have gone out, and fewer people have gone in - its not as crowded as before, some places to sit open.
11:20 they start calling one number after another and telling those people to go into a different office. dont know why.
11:22 time of my original guess. NS: 179 we think max might actually win...would the numbers keep rolling? by now there are only about 10 of us in the dank room. (we think that many people came without appts early in the morning to pull numbers, and when the office realized they couldnt serve everyone and were making the people with appts wait a vey long time, they started to send people without appts, but holding numbers elsewhere to be helped)
11:30 time of max's original guess NS: 186, so close yet so far away....
11:41 this is the half-way pt between max's original guess and my second guess NS:190. who will the winner be? the competition is getting heated, we are watching the clock with eagle eyes! max thinks that we are probably going to end up at the window where the guy scolded him like a red headed step child.
11:46 NS:194 and the winner is....ME! lunch is on max! The window we ended up at was not the guy that told off max, instead it was an italian that BARELY spoke italian. there was a clear piece of thick plastic barrier between him and us (no hole for speaking/hearing better, just a small slot underneath to pass papers). he had such a thick accent, even max had to ask several times that he repeat himself. this is what we were told. what kind of visa do you have? just the tourist one because we are waiting for the permesso (duh?). (looks over passport) when did you come back? oct 2007. that wont work out, you're not supposed to do that, the visa is expired. your offices told us to fill out the paper work and do it like that. well, yes uhm. are you married? yes, it says on the documents right there, that you have in your hand, that you are looking at. yes, well, uhm what kind of permesso do you want? here we do electronic, it will take 3 months for you to rcv it. (in three months we will be back in CA, we cant come back to the office and get it) or you can get the paper kind and they will give it to you right away, but that is at the office on Montebello. whats the difference? (reiterates the statement) well if we go to Montebello...all the paperwork we put in, all the different taxes we paid, all the running around we did, all the waiting, what was that for? for nothing, you could have gone to Montebello months ago and you wouldnt have had to wait. why didnt you do that in the first place? because some one at your offices told us to follow the procedures we followed. yeah, great thanks. NEXT! That is the story of the great Psyche!, but not the end of our day....
12:00 back into the car-(max is pissed. i compare it to the amazing race, rush rush rush, just when you think you are ahead, you end up waiting for the next roadblock to open and you are at the same level as all the other teams). we take advantage of having the car and go to get contact lenses, diapers and t.p. at carrefour where you can buy bigger (not like costco big tho) and it costs less. even tho i won the bet, max chooses McD's to soothe his frustration and depression. sounds good to me too!
1:45 we head back towards home, it's starting to rain, max calls mechanic to find out what time we can pass take care of business with the old white car. no one will be in until after 5 (does anyone actually work in italy?). used car lots are probably closed at this time for lunch, so we cant go there either-we were hoping to do most of this before sophia got out of school.
2:00-4:00 watch my name is earl, amazing race, while painting more of big gigantic tree and sky for sophias room (finally)
4:00 go get sophia
4:50 (no traffic so we made it to pavia pretty quickly) - max takes care of car stuff. cost: E250 to get rid of the car. which is kind of irritating because you they will change the motor and turn around resell the thing for a profit. (but the alternitives are for us to pay for a used motor installation that will cost too much money so its not worth it or have the car towed back to one of the used car dealerships for a credit trade in, but towing will cost loads. see the triple edged sword?)
5:00 we unload our belongings from the white car and Max kisses her goodbye:

5:30 back to milan, loads of traffic. oliver's car is a little dirtier than i expected, dont think the guy has cleaned the car once since he bought it. cleaning products from our car trunk now in his car. nothing to do, so i cleaned the front area of the OMobile. 6:30 arrived at a used car place. see a couple of interesting deals. we just have to decide. i am leaning towards the blue car we saw today (cant remember model) -it has well maintained, low milage, is space and costs about 8,900-but it is a 2004. max is leaning towards the ford focus we saw last week because it is really new, low milage, but costs 13,900.
6:50 walking back to the car i noticed this bar:
do you think that extra H is on purpose??
7:00 always time to splash in a few puddles! o calls, we decide dinner together at the south american restaurant by criss's. call greta and ask her too.
7:45 max decides to drive past restaurant just in case, foreign restaurants dont usually last too long in italy. good thing, it was closed.
8:00 o calls back and wont finish work in time for dinner.
8:07 check email, facebook, cnn and foxnews. frantically clean house, scrub paint off floor, tidy up rooms/bathroom, clean kitchen cook, make dinner.
8:46 eat dinner, tomato beef, steamed egg custard, rice.
9:45 criss, ol, greta come over for drinks. greta made me a card to celebrate my end of being an illegal alien....will try to scan in, its a visual thing.
1:05 in bed WHEW!
